More than 1,000 people attended the Women's Leadership Conference held in downtown Raleigh - a gathering of female executives, entrepreneurs and women interested in starting up their own business.

The timing also coincides with Raleigh being named the 3rd largest city in the country for women-owned businesses by Coworking Cafe.

Jessica Scott, a former Maryland resident who moved to Raleigh, attended the event while working at Habitat for Humanity, and stated that her corporate experience indicated a significant pay gap for women.

The sessions encouraged participants to develop their self-confidence and demonstrate persistence in their knowledge as well as their skills and talents to succeed in business.

Participants said they still face many challenges in the form of barriers in the workplace. According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), women employed on a full-time basis throughout the U.S., earn an average of 81 cents for every dollar earned by men.

“I find myself frequently being the only female among my peers in a given professional environment,” stated Kristen Hess, founder of HH Architecture. “This experience has given me the motivation to maintain focus on my future growth in these areas as well as contribute towards eliminating these issues.”
