International Seaways, a top-tier global tanker operator, and international ship management and marine services provider V., have launched a new “women's cadet training program” aimed at promoting gender diversity at sea.
The two companies are introducing a series of initiatives under the program to create a more comfortable and supportive onboard environment for women. Some of these include access to female facilities, customized work uniforms and safety equipment, along with wellness initiatives.
Beginning in September, the new cohort of female cadets will train on two specially allocated ships, assisted throughout their first sea rotation by senior women officers from the INSW fleet. An onboard inclusion and culture training module will also be launched to encourage safer and more inclusive working environments in all crews.
Now, women comprise fewer than 2 percent of seafarers around the world, yet the shipping industry is experiencing an increasing shortage of talent. This collaborative initiative between INSW and V. aims to bring sea careers to the forefront for women and expand the shipping industry's talent pool, creating a more diverse and sustainable future for shipping.
Lois Zabrocky, CEO of INSW, emphasized the untapped potential of women in maritime, stating, “We’re proud to partner with V. to foster a more inclusive workplace at sea. Creating equal opportunities benefits the entire industry.”
René Kofod-Olsen, V.Group CEO, said, "This scheme is an important milestone in our long-established partnership with INSW. A diverse workforce provides a strategic advantage, enabling us to deliver operation excellence and support the next generation of professionals in the maritime sector."
International Seaways runs a total of 84 vessels that consist of VLCCs, Suezmaxes, LR tankers, and MRs and has its head office in New York. The company continues to adhere to the highest standards of customer service, efficiency, and safety in international energy transport.
