Women's health-focused startup, Ovum has secured $4 million in seed funding, getting its valuation tripled while continuing its journey of bridging the women's health gap with artificial intelligence (AI).
The startup was initiated by Dr. Ariella Heffernan-Marks, a medical doctor who has changed her profession to being an entrepreneur. She is also an upcoming speaker at the Women's Health and Wellbeing Summit in Sydney on September 1.
The firm claims that it is developing the world's first AI infrastructure for women's health. Dr Heffernan-Markshas at one point talked about how her interactions with the healthcare system motivated her to start the company with the goal of empowering women to advocate themselves better in clinical environments.
The latest round of funding was mainly led by Admiralty Capital Group. Other investors participating in the round were Antler, Giant Leap, Aviron Investments, Foggy Valley Aotearoa, Brisbane Angels, and Think & Grow. Besides that, LaunchVic also supplemented their investment via The Alice Anderson Fund.
Key Highlights:
Ovum has been growing at the rate of 30 percent month-on-month since its launch in August last year. The company claims that it has gathered around 60, 000 women's health data insights and enabled more than 113,000 AI health conversations from women. This recent funding round comes after a $1.7 million pre-seed round.
Dr. Heffernan-Marks shared, “I’ve sat on both sides of the desk, as a patient and as a doctor, and that’s why this mission matters so much to me. For too long, women have had to navigate healthcare systems that were not designed around their lived experiences or backed by sufficient female health data. Ovum exists to help women better understand their bodies, advocate for themselves with confidence, and contribute to research that improves care for future generations.”
According to her, the $4 million funding will allow Ovum to further its mission, support a larger number of women and continue its work in establishing a trusted platform that is rooted in clinical integrity, privacy, and consent.
At the beginning of this year, Ovum started clinical research with St George Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Women, thereby becoming the first entity in Australia to evaluate AI as a women's preventative health tool.
Besides that, the company highlighted its commitment to privacy by stating that data is encrypted and secured according to the highest global standards. So far, 83 percent of Ovum's users have consented to share their anonymized data which is used in research that aims to deepen the understanding, treatment, and care of women's health.
Admiralty Capital Group Founding Partner Amanda Andriano said, “The most compelling companies are often built around problems society has learned to tolerate but should never have accepted. The gender health gap is one of those problems. Ovum combines mission, market timing and technical capability with an exceptional founder uniquely positioned to lead this movement, and we believe that creates the foundation for a company of global significance.”
