  • The accomplishment cuts across education, health, and employment sectors
  • Statement by NHRC Chairperson Maryam bint Abdullah al-Attiyah

Qatar has come a long way in advancing equality and human rights in many fields, such as education, health, and work. HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), pointed to these gains in her Ottawa meetings with Canadian government officials.

She added that Qatari women have become judges and occupied military, civil aviation, and diplomatic posts since 2010, which proves that the country has been upholding gender equality and social justice in the form of overall legislative changes.

During his talks with Athanasios Hadjis, Vice-Chairperson of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, HE Al-Attiyah highlighted NHRC's leadership in the region. The committee maintains "A" status accreditation by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions since 2010 and actively works on human rights education, examines laws, and assists in the development of such institutions in the Arab region.

Qatar has implemented several key labour reforms, including allowing employees to change employers without the authorization of their present employers, doing away with exit permits, and implementing Labour Disputes Settlement Committees to settle employment cases.

The creation of the Workers' Support and Insurance Fund guarantees workers get their rightful pay even in case of default by the employer, and the Wage Protection System (WPS) guarantees guaranteed timely payment of wages through a secure electronic system. Summer work-hour limits further shield outdoor workers from scorching heat, and the "Worker's Pocket Guide" in 11 languages and free legal assistance via 30 law firms promote justice awareness and access.

During another meeting with Frances McRae, Deputy Minister of Women, Gender Equality, and Youth, HE Maryam emphasized the comprehensive benefits enjoyed by women in Qatar, including access to social security, education, healthcare, flexible working arrangements, maternity leave, and leadership roles across industries. McRae commended Qatar's initiatives and explored possible partnerships to promote family protection awareness further, further boosting bilateral cooperation on human rights and gender equality.
