The UK government has appointed Mariella Frostrup as the nation’s first ambassador of Women’s Employment. She has been given the task of enhancing the conditions at workplaces, as well as keeping women engaged in employment opportunities.
Her previous position as Menopause Employment Ambassador involved organizing campaigns to engage employers and forming the Menopause Advisory Group.
This decision highlights how serious the government is about the consequences that women’s health issues may pose on the economy and labor force. It is believed that the menopausal issue costs the UK industry approximately £1.7 billion annually because of absenteeism, loss in productivity, and departures from the workforce.
As a result, organizations are being encouraged by the government to voluntarily come up with an action plan regarding their efforts in this regard, especially those organizations having more than 250 employees.
Mariella will be engaging employers and specialists across multiple sectors to recognize potential obstacles, gather evidence, and formulate policies for multiple diseases that can affect women throughout their career span, such as endometriosis and fibroids.
This position is in line with attempts to deal with increased economic inactivity, with around 1.48 million women out of work because of their prolonged illness.
The position will help the government to achieve its goals by tackling barriers faced by women as they try to engage in economic activity. As mentioned by Dame Diana Johnson, the appointment will aid the government in dealing with such problems.
Industry experts have shown approval of this development. According to Tracy Black, companies today are increasingly considering the importance of well-being and mental health in general; therefore, attention is being given to support for the menopause.
It should be considered as part of changes made to the Employment Rights Act, alongside the Women’s Health Strategy.
