The UN leadership race enters a crucial stage, with four leaders being evaluated on important issues facing the world. Aspirants to succeed Antonio Guterres will be judged on their performance in governance, crisis management, and reforming agendas. Although there is increased support for a woman to take the post, geopolitics still plays an important role.
Discussions regarding the appointment of the possible first woman head of the United Nations have seen the two leading candidates emerging to be Rebeca Grynspan and Michelle Bachelet. While Michelle’s credentials are strong, given her vast background as head of state as well as within the United Nations, she is experiencing political opposition from the likes of Jose Antonio Kast from Chile.
Rebecca holds strong track in economic governance and development and brings a distinct edge to the race. Currently serving the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, she is actively involved in advocating for inclusive growth and gender equity. Her bid for the position is less controversial, but she still faces geopolitical hurdles similar to Michelle, shaped by veto dynamics within the United Nations Security Council.
Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly, called the governing of the role as both complex and critical. She described it as “one of the toughest jobs globally,” noting that the next secretary-general will have an influential impact on both institutional direction and the rules-based international order as the custodian of the UN Charter.
The other two male contenders, Rafael Grossi and Macky Sall are gaining equal momentum for the role. Rafael, of the International Atomic Energy Agency leads, is backed by active nuclear diplomacy but faces criticism over Iran. Macky, offers Global South perspective but faces governance concerns. With only four contenders, the process somehow signals rising fragmentation and questions around United Nation’s role.
