Melinda French Gates Pledges $215M for Women's Health

Melinda French Gates has pledged $215 million to scale access to contraceptive services, focusing on women’s health worldwide. Deepening her philanthropic endeavours, the support will strengthen maternal healthcare systems, and support underfunded health needs of women in middle age.

With the newest round of funding, Melinda’s total contributions to women’s health have surpassed $600 million over two years, reflecting her persistent endeavours to long-term health equity investments.

In an interview with The Associated Press, an American not-for-profit news agency, Melinda noted that women’s health is at the heart of her impact agenda.

“The role of philanthropy, in my opinion, is to look at some of these societal problems that have been left behind, and shine light on them, show ways of making progress so you can then crowd in other donors and ultimately crowd in government funding,” she said. “Part of what I’m doing here, I hope, is sending a signal to say, ‘This is really important. Let’s do something about it.’ And my hope is that I’ll be able to get others who will join me.”

“I want women’s health issues to not be invisible,” she said. “I don’t want the default to be that women are expected to deal with pain and suffering. I want them to be seen for what they’re going through, their real life experiences, and have those issues addressed so they can live their very best lives."

Key Highlights:

  • Melinda French Gates pledges $215M to expand global women’s health access
  • Funding pushes total women’s health giving past $600M in two years
  • New investments target contraception, maternal care, and menopause gaps

This large round of investment is focused on addressing persistent gaps in global health financing. A $40 million grant to Co-Impact will support the integration of mental health support within maternal and primary healthcare delivery, particularly across African health systems.

“It’s just blaringly obvious that women’s health is fundamental — she has to be well to do well in life,” Melinda said.

In parallel, a $10 million donation to The Menopause Society seeks to advance menopause care in the U.S. by strengthening healthcare provider education and expanding service reach in underserved markets, with the intention of driving greater ecosystem of funding momentum.

Data from the records of World Economic Forum underscores a persistent investment disparity and gap. Women represent about half the population yet their health needs receive only around 2% of private healthcare funding. This imbalance limits innovation. It also leads to a shortage of dedicated products, services, and scalable healthcare solutions.

Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director of The Menopause Society and head of the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Women’s Health, said that the donation will support broader dissemination of educational tools to strengthen clinical capacity in underserved geographies.

Since 2024, after exiting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which she co-established with Bill Gates and grew into a major force in global healthcare philanthropy, Melinda has recalibrated her giving approach to place greater strategic focus on women’s empowerment and health.
