SM Prime Holdings Inc. further bolstered its drive for climate resilience as Vice President for Design, Innovation and Strategy Jessica Sy joined regional policymakers and development leaders at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction's Women International Network for Disaster Risk Reduction Excellence Awards held in Bangkok on November 25.
SM Prime, known for its ESG+R framework for sustainability, has supported the program through partnership with the Australian government since 2021.
The WIN DRR showcases several women in the Asia-Pacific whose work hopes to minimize disaster risks and create communities ready for disaster as climate hazards further intensify.
This year’s awards have attracted over 200 nominations and the judges have selected seven Rising Stars and seven Excellence Award finalists. Indonesia’s Nashin Mahtani heads the Disaster Map Foundation, or Yayasan Peta Bencana. He received the Rising Star Award for expanding real-time risk-mapping systems used widely across Southeast Asia.
Kiribati’s Takena Redfern, Acting Director of the Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Division, took home the Excellence Award for leadership on the country’s “Early Warnings for All” roadmap.
Jessica added that the awardees show how timely data, early warning tools, and community-centered initiatives are helping to reduce the impacts of disaster and support long-term resilience. “It is an initiative which we deeply believe in,” she said.
This was followed by a panel discussion on women's leadership in disaster risk reduction where Asia Pacific College President Maria Teresita Pastor Medado was one of the speakers.
The event was capped with a consultation on WIN DRR’s future plans, with SM Prime represented by Atty. Pearly Joan Jayagan Turley, senior assistant vice-president for Corporate Compliance and program director of SM CARES for Women.
