Santa Monica-based Perelel, a women's health supplement company co-founded by an OB/GYN, announced it has received a $27M growth investment led by Prelude Growth Partners, along with additional participation from Unilever Ventures, Willow Growth Partners and Selva Ventures.
Perelel was started by Alex Taylor and Victoria Thain Gioia after their own struggles to find adequate prenatal vitamins.
Victoria thinks the fact that there was no vitamin on the market which converted folate to folic acid early on in her pregnancy led to her daughter being born with a cleft. The two cofounders teamed up with Taylor’s OB/GYN, Dr. Banafsheh Bayati, to build the company.
According to Perelel, the new funding marks a shift in the company's focus from purely prenatal to a broader women's health portfolio, offering clinically backed products from fertility and pregnancy through postpartum and perimenopause.
The investment will also allow the company to transition early angel investors out in favor of longer-term partners.
The company claims to have profits, revenue up to two times year on year, and high retention of its subscribers.
Perelel is attributing its growth to a research focused approach toward building trust in sectors that tend to be trend-driven and full of unsubstantiated claims.
CEO Victoria Thain Gioia said that the investment confirms the company's commitment to developing clinical rigor and evidence-based solutions.
Prelude Growth Partners said that Perelel is distinguished by its scientific support and focus on women's health at a time when consumer demand for evidence-based and credible wellness products is beginning to rise in the overall health space.
Perelel plans to develop non-vitamin products such as green powders and protein powders as well as other products focused on supporting women's health through all stages of their hormonal cycles.
It also purchased LOOM; a platform dedicated to reproductive and sexual health education, to continue to enhance access to trustworthy health information and pledged $10 million toward advancing women's health research and addressing disparities in reproductive health care.
Industry observers say that heightened consumer scrutinyen of supplement efficacy and safety is driving demand for science-backed products. Perelel's physician-founded brand centered on clinical credibility meets this demand.
